History of Queenstown Airport
In 1935, Queenstown Airport was granted its first operating license. In 1950, Southern Scenic Air Services Ltd. established the first scheduled scenic route between Queenstown and Dunedin. Mount Cook Airline was the pioneer of Queenstown tourism flights.
The grass runway was lengthened in the 1960s. Regular services from Christchurch began on November 6, 1961, with DC-3s operating three weekly flights to Queenstown via Mount Cook and Te Anau/Manapouri on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Soon after that, services to other domestic destinations followed. In October 1968, aircraft that could carry between 42 and 58 passengers were utilized.
Beginning service in September 1970, the Britten Norman Islander was a fixture of the Milford route. They were used extensively on Milford Sound, Queenstown-Te Anau, and Queenstown-Alexandra-Dunedin flights.
Using British Aerospace 146 aircraft, Ansett New Zealand introduced the first jet aircraft voyage into Queenstown Airport in 1989. In 1992, Air New Zealand introduced the Boeing 737-200 aircraft.
In 1995, Air New Zealand landed the first trans-Tasman flight from Sydney to Queenstown Airport. More flights soon followed, carrying primarily skiers during the winter months. After that, a nearly continuous expansion program was implemented to meet passenger and airline demand.
In 2004, Qantas began using RNP AR (Required Navigational Performance, Authorization Required) when approaching and departing Queenstown. In 2012, Airways New Zealand implemented complete RNP AR flight procedures. The airport inaugurated its new international facility in June 2015.
Both New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approved Queenstown Airport's foundation safety case for after-dark flights in May 2014, pending the implementation of additional infrastructure, such as runway lights and onboard technology.
The airport's runway lights were formally activated in May 2016 by transportation minister Simon Bridges. The runway lighting permitted the airport to continue operations past the sunset noise abatement curfew of 10:00 p.m.
